How do I connect high speed wireless adapter to high speed usb port?

I have a high speed wireless network adapter for connecting my laptop to the internet. I have a netgear wireless router. my laptop has four usb ports at the rear, which according to computer properties, one of is high speed (the word used is enhanced) but at best am only getting 54.0mps and thats within 10 feet of router. how can I make sure my wireless adapter is plugged into the correct port?
